Setting Target Earnings When You Work From Home

When you are toiling away at home as a self-employed entrepreneur you need to keep in mind what you are trying to achieve – that is to make a living and to do it from the comfort of your own home. While data entry work can keep the wolf from the door, you need to be sure that you have chosen the right job that is actually paying you what you are worth.

Getting paid what you are worth may take a while, so at the very least you need to have a realistic budget and start out at the minimum amount that you need to earn per day – minimum because you may need to work up a reputation, you may need to find your niche; per day because if you have in mind that you must earn $3,000 per month you’ll be stressing for the whole month – day one earn $100 “OMG I’ll never make it”. $3,000 per month is equivalent to $100 per day, but as your own boss now do you really want to work every single day – give yourself a 5 day working week – so that’s $150.00 per day. If you estimate that you need to earn $150 per day, then after earning $100 you can say “Well I did okay, tomorrow I’ll try to push it up a bit”.

If you find a fairly regular source of work which isn’t really paying enough you’ll have to make a decision

- do you continue doing it hoping that you can work hard enough to bring your earnings up or that they will realize your potential and increase your pay rate

- or do you continue doing it to keep a trickle of money coming in while you find something better.

I would favor the latter as no matter how much money you have in reserve you don’t want to use it all up and have to return to working for an employer. Eventually you will find the right project (we don’t call them jobs anymore because you are self-employed) to enable you to earn the money you need.

But that’s not the end of it…..

Once you are earning your target of say $100 – remember that was just your minimum. Don’t be tempted to limit yourself by saying “well I earned $97 today I can finish”. If your minimum was $100 per day but your must earn was $200 per day (which will give you a bit of extra cash and allow you to have a life) keep pushing your limits and before you know it you’ll be on top of the world knowing that you can make your living from home. From there the sky is the limit – if you can make $200 a day how will you feel on that day that you make $300 a day! And then…
